Dr. Laura Albareda will be presenting:

"Commons Organizing and Polycentric Governance on the Anthropocene"

In recent years, organizational, business ethics and economic scholars have been paying greater attention to the development of commons organizing. The latter refers to the processes by which communities of people work in common in the pursuit of the common good. In turn, this promotes commons organizational designs based on collective forms of common goods production, distribution, management and ownership (Albareda and Sison, 2020). I will analysis the growing of commons organizing based on two main literature streams: the ethical approach based on the theory of the common good of the firm in virtue ethics and the economic approach based on the theory of institutions for collective action developed by Ostrom’s research on common-pool resources to avert the tragedy of the commons. In so doing, I extend the analysis to novel concepts, such as commons organizing, “commoning”, regenerative organizations and polycentric governance. Drawing on the analysis of commons organizing, I propose a comprehensive model, highlighting the integration of two sets of organizing principles—common good and collective action – and five problem-solving processes. Searching for empirical research, I will also introduce two commons organizing models. The first one focuses on how polycentric governance is applied to privately owned resources in circular economy systems in Finland, Spain and the United States. The second model focuses on biocentric work for natural commons on the Anthropocene, based on the research on in-land fishing in Finland. The goal is to contribute to the development of a commons organizing theory.
