Navigating Complexity: (Non) Interventions through Systemic Design

Innovation North's Speaker Series brings together leading experts, both academics and practitioners, to share their insights and experiences on Systems innovation. Our next speaker is Tobias Luthe, Director of the Designing Resilient Regenerative Systems Program at ETH Zurich and the founding Director of the MonViso Institute (MVI) in the Italian Alps, where he designed the passive net-positive "regenerator" house, Il Doppio.

On February 6th, Tobias will present "Navigating Complexity: (Non) Interventions through Systemic Design." He'll explore why, where, when & how we should (or should not) intervene in complex systems. Shifting from external "engineering" solutions to fostering emergence from within, he'll discuss how entrepreneurs act to change systems, the science behind their actions, and the strategies that guide these changes.

Tobias Luthe

Tobias is a transdisciplinary scientist in the fields of complex adaptive (social-ecological) systems, with graduate trainings in forest and environmental sciences, wood technology, wood engineering and passive house design, ecological economics and industrial ecology, in communication and didactics on sustainability. He holds a PhD in resilience of mountain systems at the interlink of economics, ecology and sports sciences. Tobias is interested in place-based human-environment relations and the transition of societies beyond sustainability – across disciplines, economic sectors, cultures and in various geographies.

Being trained in the natural and social sciences, and in engineering, he is used to combining, mixing and integrating rigorous quantitative (network analysis, footprint accounting, life cycle assessment, choice experiments) and qualitative methods (co-creation, interviews, consultations, focus groups), as well as engineering design, prototyping, design thinking and doing, and research by design to address complex real-world challenges with “organic” methods combination that tackle emergent system properties.
