Why did you choose Ivey’s HBA program?
I chose Ivey’s HBA program for its unique 2+2 structure, allowing me to explore the liberal arts before fully committing to business. I also love the case method—it goes beyond a traditional educational experience to develop real-world problem-solving skills. Long-term, I aim to become an entrepreneur, and Ivey’s practical, hands-on approach is the perfect preparation.
Describe one highlight of your Ivey Experience thus far.
One highlight of my Ivey experience has been the many guest speakers, including CEOs, founders, and renowned academics. Hearing from leaders like Ian Rosen, Zita Cobb, Doug Murphy, and Todd Zenger has provided real-life insights that bring our classroom theories and frameworks to life. These sessions have not only been valuable for learning but also for the opportunity to ask questions and make personal connections.
What advice do you have for incoming HBA students?
Immerse yourself fully in the Ivey experience—academically, professionally, and socially. Prepare thoroughly for cases, explore different industries, and understand each framework. Career-wise, connect with a variety of people and attend info sessions to discover new opportunities. Socially, embrace your section—they’ll become your lifelong network, business partners, and close friends.
How has Ivey’s Career Management team set you up for success?
Ivey’s Career Management team has been instrumental in my career prep. The team provides access to job postings, which is extremely helpful in finding reputable opportunities. The in-class career management sessions also helped me prepare for interviews. One session, we worked through behavioral questions by developing a framework to structure my answers and practicing with a comprehensive list of potential questions.
What kind of support did you find the most helpful with the intense curriculum in HBA1?
The most helpful support during the intense HBA1 curriculum was my section mates. There’s always someone passionate or experienced in every topic, and leaning on them—as they do with you—makes a huge difference. Managing the rigor of HBA1 together is not only more effective but also more fun, especially when you get to celebrate your successes as a group at the end of a long week.
What has been the most challenging part of the program for you and how did you overcome it?
The most challenging part of the program has been constantly working in teams. It’s challenging because not everyone will always agree, but it’s a crucial skill for all aspects of life. Teamwork at Ivey is more than just dividing work—it’s about true collaboration. To overcome these challenges, we set expectations with a team charter, hold each other accountable, prioritize the team’s success, take the time to understand one another, and made sure to have fun along the way!
How has Ivey helped you become a leader and make an impact on the world around you?
Ivey has helped me become a leader by teaching theories that apply far beyond business decisions. Almost every course includes at least one case applying concepts learned to nonprofits or social enterprise. For example, learning how to give feedback is a leadership skill valuable in any situation. At Ivey the case format also enables discussions on what’s right versus wrong, regardless of financial outcomes.
