Introduction to Content Management Systems

A Content Management System (CMS) is a tool that makes creating, updating, removing, and managing content on a website easy.

A website is really just a page full of organized text, images, and links to other content on the internet. If we think about the major function of a website after it has been set up, it is usually to provide accurate and relevant information for visitors.

So, if all we wanted to do on a website is create new pages or articles, or update and remove old ones, it doesn’t make sense to spend a long time learning how the computer code, web servers, and complex IT systems in the background works. This is where a CMS is the answer.

A CMS provides a familiar user interface (similar to a word processor such as Microsoft Word) that allows anyone to easily add text, content, and images to their website without needing to understand all the technical details. Using pre-designed templates, you can input the content you wish to display into the appropriate area and publish your new content in minutes.

In a way, the CMS does all the heavy lifting by taking the content you input, styling it appropriately for the page it will be published on, coding it into computer language and communicating with the website to publish and make it visible to visitors.
