The Ivey Business School announced the appointment of Mahmood Nanji as Acting Director for the Lawrence National Centre for Policy and Management and Executive-in-Residence effective January 2, 2018.
Mahmood has more than 25 years of experience in both Ontario and federal governments, and brings extensive policy, operational, governance, and commercial transactions experience to the leadership role of the Lawrence Centre. He will develop the Centre’s strategic direction, oversee new and ongoing research projects, connect with students through guest teaching, and government-related field projects, and engage with business and government leaders through outreach efforts.
Mahmood has held various senior leadership positions and led complex and challenging initiatives while with the Ministries of Finance, Economic Development and Trade, Energy, Public Infrastructure Renewal, and Cabinet Office. Most recently, he was the Associate Deputy Minister of Finance and was instrumental in the development of the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan, and leading the province’s tax and benefits administration. During 2017, Mahmood co-authored a report for the World Bank Group on the Evolution of the Canadian Pension Model.
He has also negotiated significant business agreements, including the restructuring of General Motors and Chrysler, the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension, the First Nations Gaming Revenue Sharing Agreement and co-investment economic development initiatives.
Mahmood has also served on several boards, including OPSEU Pension Trust, Ontario Northland Transportation Commission, and Ontario Aerospace Council.
