What is the Western Leadership Certificate, Powered by Ivey?
As the world faces converging grand challenges, it will require leaders who can work across all disciplines to help solve them. The Western Leadership Certificate aims to contribute to Western’s goal of producing the public, private, and not-for-profit sector leaders of tomorrow. It will grow and heighten the leadership capacities within our students so they may reach their full potential as both citizens and leaders through the development of critical competencies, character, and commitment in their personal and professional lives.
The Western Leadership Certificate is powered by Ivey Business School and offered to undergraduate students at Western University and the Affiliates. The Certificate provides both breadth and depth in leadership knowledge and practice through three credits:
- 1.5 credits offered by Ivey Business School
- 1.5 credits from a suite of existing leadership courses across various Western faculties and Affiliates
The Western Leadership Certificate is generously funded by BMO Financial Group.
Why should I apply for the Western Leadership Certificate?
Students enrolled in the Western Leadership Certificate will leave this program with foundational leadership competencies, a grounding in and awareness of the scholarship on leader character and how to develop character within themselves, and an articulated purpose they can put into action in service of their teams, organizations, communities, and society at large.
The need for leadership transcends sectors. Students who participate in this Certificate will not only cultivate their character but also develop a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness between leadership, innovation, progress and flourishing. Moreover, in an increasingly complex and rapidly-evolving global landscape, students who are equipped with the ability to lead with purpose and find meaning in their careers are better positioned to navigate challenges, and inspire positive change.
What are the application requirements for the Western Leadership Certificate?
The Certificate is open to all Western and Affiliate students. To be eligible for admission, students must complete their first year requirements with a minimum average of 70%. Leadership experience is not required to apply. Space is limited to 75 students per year, so acceptance is not guaranteed.
We intend to build a balanced cohort, based upon discipline, and we encourage student leaders and equity-deserving students to apply. Students will fill out an application form in order to be considered, which includes two short essay questions.
