When Frances Guo, MBA '18 candidate, came to Canada last September from Beijing, China, she tried to change herself to fit in with the mainstream culture. She minimized her differences in all aspects, tried to rebuild herself to be the same as those around her, and held back any opinions or thoughts that didn't fit with Canadian norms.
This behaviour lasted for months and eroded her self-confidence, until she attended an Ivey workshop to learn more about Professor Martha Maznevski’s research on Leadership, Diversity, and High-Performance Teams, and McKinsey’s latest study, Diversity Matters.
"The workshop helped me to change my mentality toward being different from the majority surrounding me," Guo writes. "Now I am more confident about my unique background. This shift happened thanks to Ivey’s efforts in providing such a safe environment to encourage and embrace diversity."
