Toronto restaurant chain Bier Markt, owned by Cara Foods, recently changed the uniforms for female employees from a black shirt and black dress pants to short tightly-fitted blue dresses. The change in uniforms quickly sparked media attention after two female employees quit their jobs and filed complaints with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario.
In a piece for Yahoo News, Associate Professor Ann Frost addressed the human rights issues of restaurant chains not only forcing their female employees to wear racy uniforms, but also issues of pay and hours worked.
“[The employees] seem to know nothing about their right,” said Frost. “If they understood their Employment Standards Act then the employers would not get away with this.”
