As auto investment soars in Mexico and light vehicle production tops three million for the first time, Mexico is growing into a global powerhouse. Canada, on the other hand, is falling behind, leading to concerns that the future of Canada's auto industry is in jeopardy.
Mexico has its advantages, being next to the U.S. market and close to emerging markets in South America, as well as having ports open all year.
Observers “forget the advantages that Mexico has developed in terms of location and market access,” said Ivey professor Paul Boothe.
