Update: Read Allison Johnson’s comments in CBC News about why the Enbridge commercials are a touchy issue.

Tim Hortons received a lot of backlash for airing in-store ads for pipeline giant Enbridge. Enbridge’s involvement in the Northern Gateway pipeline project in the West Coast has been quite controversial, and as a result, Tim Hortons’ customers were not pleased.

Assistant Professor Allison Johnson spoke with The Canadian Press about Tim Hortons’ decision to run the Enbridge ads.

“It was a tone deaf move for Tim Hortons to run the Enbridge ads in the first place,” said Johnson. “Having put these ads on in their stores, they were implicitly endorsing Enbridge.”
