More than 1,000 jobs are coming to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ assembly plant in Windsor, but for Assistant Professor Mike Moffatt, more needs to be done to diversify southwestern Ontario’s economy.

"We need to think of what we can do for automotive, but as well, how we can strengthen some of our other sectors," he said in an interview with CBC News.

Windsor shouldn't discourage automotive investment, but it may be better to encourage international postgraduate students to stay in Canada and to strengthen other sectors like technology and financial services, says Moffatt.

"More diversity is better. This isn't just a southwestern Ontario problem. We're seeing this out in Alberta and in Newfoundland, with the over-reliance on the oil and gas sector,” he said.
