All sailors know that an anchor can keep you and your boat safe. The same is true of fiscal anchors.
In his op-ed for Maclean's, Professor Paul Boothe, Director of the Lawrence National Centre for Policy and Management, discusses the federal government's lack of fiscal anchors in Budget 2016.
“Having no fiscal anchor means that the government is without self-imposed restraints on its spending behaviour," said Boothe. "Thus, investors and voters are left to imagine how the government will behave if economic conditions worsen. Such uncertainty can reduce confidence among private sector firms considering whether and in what country to invest in new capacity.”
