LONDON, ONTARIO, February 25, 2013 – Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney urged banks to rediscover their core values if they want to regain public trust as he presented the 2013 Thomas d’Aquino Lecture on Leadership at Ivey today.
The lecture, entitled “Rebuilding Trust in Banking,” stressed rediscovering core values is a responsibility that extends beyond the reach of global banking reforms.
“Virtue cannot be regulated. Even the strongest supervision cannot guarantee good conduct,” said Carney. “Essential will be the rediscovery of core values and, ultimately, this is a question of individual responsibility.”
In his speech to Ivey students, Carney urged them to give careful thought to their professional values and the legacy they want to leave behind.
Ivey Dean Carol Stephenson said the opportunity to hear from Carney would likely be remembered by students as a milestone in their time at Ivey.
“Governor Carney’s leadership abilities have been recognized globally. His tenure as Governor of the Bank of Canada has been marked by creativity, sound judgment and courage during a period of unprecedented challenges to the world’s financial system,” she said. “His career in the world of private capital markets, central banking and international financial regulation has gained him great respect. We at Ivey were very proud to have Governor Carney deliver the Thomas d’Aquino Lecture on Leadership.”
In his introduction to the lecture, Tom d’Aquino, Chairman and Chief Executive of Intercounsel Limited and Chair of the Advisory Council of Ivey’s Lawrence National Centre for Policy and Management, noted Carney’s own display of virtuous core values.
“Governor Carney is a man of vision who possesses a powerful intellect, an unshakeable devotion to public service and the courage of his convictions,” he said. “As one of the world’s most respected central bankers, he has contributed in a significant way to stability in global financial circles. His insights will be long remembered by students and community leaders alike.”
The Thomas d’Aquino Lecture on Leadership is sponsored by the Richard Ivey School of Business in conjunction with the Lawrence National Centre for Policy and Management headed by Professor Paul Boothe.
Past presenters have been Clerk of the Privy Council, Kevin Lynch; Bank of Canada Governor, David Dodge; former Deputy Prime Minister, John Manley; Home Depot Canada President, Annette Verschuren; former Finance Minister and Canadian Ambassador to the United States, Michael Wilson and d’Aquino, who delivered the inaugural lecture in 2007.
“The annual lecture engages Ivey students in a direct way and offers them an opportunity to ask questions of some of Canada’s most respected leaders,” said Boothe. “As Governor Carney prepares to take his leave at the Bank of Canada for his next post as Governor of the Bank of England, he stands as an exemplar among our leaders.”
