The phone rings:
“Are you OK? You sound stressed? What do you mean by a 48-hour report?”
Ivey students and their parents know this conversation all too well. Given the HBA program’s unique structure of case-based learning in place of lectures, plus the challenge of recruitment sessions, lemonade stands, and overnight reports, sometimes it is difficult for parents to understand exactly what their son or daughter is going through.
This conundrum has inspired Parents’ Day, an annual first-semester event hosted by the program, which invites HBA parents to experience life as an HBA student.
This year, parents had an opportunity to tour the school and meet the faculty members who teach and mentor their children. The fun truly began in the afternoon, when parents were led through a full case class and discussion to give them a taste of the 500 Ivey cases that students complete during the HBA program.
"While I was familiar with the Ivey Business School, I didn't know a lot about the case study method used in the program," said one parent, Peggy Sweeney. "I now have a much better sense of what my son is learning and how he is learning it."
