Ivey’s EMBA Fall ’14 class just wrapped up their final group presentations after 16 months of classes and hard work. But the class used their time together not only to develop themselves as business leaders, but to grow and succeed as a dedicated team of fundraisers.
The class decided very early on to set their sights on raising money for Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundation, a volunteer-based national organization that raises funds to improve health outcomes and the quality of life of children and families living with and beyond kids cancer. Struck by the fact that childhood cancer is the leading cause of non-accidental death in children in Canada, the class took it upon themselves to raise awareness and money to help this important cause.

“All EMBA participants and faculty are privileged to have the opportunity to learn from each other in a spirit of learning, personal and professional development and respect,” said Professor Murray Bryant. “The participants appreciate that not all those in Canada and elsewhere have the opportunities and privileges that they do.”
Through a series of fundraising activities, including a golf tournament, the EMBA Fall ’14 managed to raise a staggering $96,157.
“The fundraising campaign was a terrific bonding experience for our class,” said Heather Jager, EMBA ’14. “It provided great opportunities for us to be creative and enjoy fun social time together, but the best part was the heartwarming feeling of knowing that 100 per cent of the money we raised will benefit children and families affected by cancer across Canada. As a class we challenge all future EMBA cohorts to meet or beat our donation to their chosen charity. Giving back feels good!”
All of the funds raised for the organization are distributed to regional cancer charities, childhood cancer research projects and all 17 pediatric oncology centres and hospitals throughout Ontario and across Canada.
“We are thrilled and extremely grateful for the generous donation the Ivey EMBA team has raised for childhood cancer. These funds are critical in helping pay for essential programs that have significantly improved the survival rates and the quality of life for children fighting cancer,” said Jeff Rushton, Founder and Very Passionate Volunteer of Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundation.
Rushton said the Ivey EMBA class demonstrated the highest level of social awareness and leadership, traits that will differentiate and serve them well in the future. “Through their efforts they enhance their communities and are true role models for all of us. We are humbled by the efforts of this amazing team,” said Rushton.
