In the spring issue of Western University's Alumni Gazette, Ivey alumnus Rory Capern, HBA ’00 & MBA ’04, talks about his passion for the Internet and working at Twitter Canada.
In 2011, Capern joined Google Canada as its head of partnerships. Two years later, he made the jump to Twitter Canada. He was the company's 37th employee, joining in its early stages, and climbed the ranks to his current role as Twitter Canada's managing director.
With so many social networks floating around the Internet, Capern doesn’t see a rivalry between Twitter and other platforms. He sees it as a “coopetition.”
“There’s a lot of positive momentum right now and we’re all trying to make the Canadian web better. We have a much more collaborative environment and culture than what exists in many other countries. When the tide rises, all boats float.”
Capern currently acts as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Ivey, and finds it inspiring to connect and work with current students.
“Every time I drive back down the 401, I’m reminded the economy is in good hands. We have a good batch of thinkers that are coming out of Ivey and Western who can carry it all.”
