Ivey Professor Tima Bansal has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Hamburg’s Faculty of Business, Economics, and Social Sciences.
The honour recognizes Bansal’s outstanding academic and teaching achievements specifically related to her interdisciplinary approach to studying sustainability and corporate social responsibility.
In a ceremony over Zoom, Bansal accepted the degree, along with a second recipient, Andreas Georg Scherer from the University of Zurich.
In her remarks, she reflected on the role of business in society: "At no other time in history has society faced so many global challenges that threaten our shared future, such as pandemics, climate change, and income inequality. Business schools have an important role to play in ensuring that businesses are prepared to tackle these challenges and assure future prosperity."
The honorary degree is another example of Bansal demonstrating excellence in her field of study and research. Over the summer, she saw her Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Sustainability that she’s held since 2013 renewed for a seven-year term. Bansal is the founder of the Network for Business Sustainability – a network of over 35,000 researchers and managers committed sustainable business. She is also on the Boards of the United Nations Principles for Responsible Education and the Academy of Management. Bansal was also recently inducted to the Royal Society of Canada and the Academy of Management.
