Welcoming Ivey’s new Dean: A Q&A with Julian Birkinshaw
Ivey welcomed its new Dean, Julian Birkinshaw, MBA ’91, PhD ’95, on August 1, 2024. He joined Ivey from the London Business School in the U.K., where he held a variety of posts for the past 25 years, most recently as Vice-Dean. Noting that Ivey is “in my blood,” Birkinshaw is excited to shape the School’s future during his appointment as Dean.
Ideas Igniting Change: Ivey launches thought leadership hub, Impact
Earlier this year, Ivey launched Impact, a digital hub showcasing faculty research and thought leadership. Designed for leaders, Impact offers cutting-edge insights, innovative research, and practical knowledge that address critical issues through articles, podcasts, and videos.
Introducing: the Ivey Impact Podcast
This year also marked the launch of the Ivey Impact Podcast. Tailored for modern leaders, each episode brings the expertise and innovative thinking of Ivey's globally recognized faculty to the forefront. In its debut season, Dialogue with the Dean, Dean Julian Birkinshaw engages faculty in discussions on issues that matter most to today's leaders.
Ronald D. Schmeichel Building for Entrepreneurship and Innovation
The Ronald D. Schmeichel Building for Entrepreneurship and Innovation officially opened in the fall, providing the resources to turn ideas into action. Named for a $10-million gift from Ron Schmeichel, JD ’95, the state-of-the-art, 100,000-square-foot building houses the largest maker space in Canada available to all students, staff, faculty, and alumni.
Ivey ranks among top 30 globally for research impact
Ivey earned a spot among the world’s top institutions for business research impact, ranking 30th globally in a comprehensive study by the Financial Times. The School joins an elite group, emerging as one of just 10 non-U.S. institutions in the global top 30.
Creating a safe space for Indigenous and allied learners at Ivey
Ivey hosted a five-day workshop, Reconciling Business Schools: Co-creating an Indigenous Ivey Workshop for Indigenous and Allied Learners, which brought together Indigenous scholars and community leaders, Ivey scholars, and a small group of students. Together, they shared worldviews and engaged in Indigenous-led ceremonies.
Lessons on rebuilding Ukraine from Ukrainian Ambassador Yuliya Kovaliv
Ukraine’s Ambassador to Canada, Yuliya Kovaliv, expressed optimism about Ukraine’s recovery during her keynote at Ivey’s Rebuilding Ukraine event. The event aligned with Ivey’s commitment to Ukraine, including leadership training for Ukrainian soldiers and hosting displaced Ukrainian graduate students in its MBA program.
Five years in: How Innovation North is changing the system
After five years and 30 landmark partnerships, Innovation North marked its progress with a sustainability-focused event, Innovating Systems: An Idea Exchange. The symposium brought together over 150 leaders from business and academia for a day of inspiring reflections and dynamic discussions on innovating a brighter, more resilient future.
Lessons on leading through adversity
Olympic athlete and Indigenous activist Waneek Horn-Miller shared her inspiring journey of resilience and leadership through adversity during Ivey’s HBA Leadership Day, hosted by the Ian O. Ihnatowycz Institute for Leadership. Drawing from personal experiences, Horn-Miller highlighted the importance of courage, perseverance, and empowering others.
Ivey’s MBA ranked #1 in Canada by Bloomberg Businessweek
Once again this year, Bloomberg Businessweek ranked Ivey’s MBA program as the top in Canada. This marked the ninth time since 2014 that the publication named the School’s MBA program as the top in the country.
