I Am Ivey - Madiha Khan, MBA '11

Their destinations may differ, but they all began at the same place. A look at alumni stories of success that started at Ivey.

I am a proud Ivey MBA ’11 graduate. Born and raised in the Middle East, I moved to Toronto as a teenager and have called this vibrant city home ever since. Toronto has been the backdrop to many milestones in my life, from completing high school to pursuing my MBA at Ivey. Today, I live in the city with my husband and two young children, who keep me inspired and grounded.

Outside of my professional life in real estate, I am passionate about fostering community connections and celebrating cultural diversity. I recently joined the Ivey Alumni Board as the lead of the Women in Ivey Community, where I aim to strengthen bonds among women graduates. In my free time, I enjoy exploring Toronto's architecture, travelling, and sharing stories that resonate with women and families.

What led you to your career and how has it evolved over time?

My journey into real estate was serendipitous, and I couldn’t be more grateful that it found me! It all began when I was a tour guide early in my career, showcasing stunning model homes and suites. Over time, my role evolved, and I had the privilege of leading several high-profile condo development projects across Toronto, including iconic landmarks like The Residences at the Ritz-Carlton and the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) towers.

Today, I channel that experience into my work as a real estate salesperson, helping clients find their perfect homes and plant their roots in this dynamic city. What started as an unexpected opportunity has grown into a passion for guiding others through one of life’s most important decisions.

Who inspired you?

My parents have been my greatest inspiration. As a teenage immigrant, I experienced firsthand the courage, resilience, and challenges that come with starting over in a new country to build a better future for your family. Watching my parents’ unwavering determination and sacrifice instilled in me a profound sense of gratitude and drive. Their progressive thinking and bravery continue to motivate me every day to work harder, embrace challenges, and strive to become the best version of myself. Their journey reminds me of the power of perseverance and the importance of creating opportunities for others, just as they did for me.

How did Ivey play a role?

Ivey played a transformative role in shaping my professional journey and personal growth. The case-based learning method pushed me to think critically, solve problems creatively, and collaborate effectively with a diverse group of peers. Beyond academics, Ivey provided me with a network of incredibly talented individuals who continue to inspire and support me to this day.

The program also gave me the confidence to take on leadership roles, navigate complex challenges, and embrace opportunities outside my comfort zone. Whether it was through classroom discussions, group projects, or alumni connections, Ivey instilled in me the importance of lifelong learning and the value of building meaningful relationships. Those lessons have been instrumental in my real estate career and my ability to thrive in a dynamic and ever-changing industry

Why did you choose the MBA program specifically?

I chose the Ivey MBA program because it offered exactly what I was looking for: a fast-paced, immersive experience that combined academic rigour with real-world application. The case-based learning approach stood out to me as a practical way to develop decision-making skills and gain exposure to diverse perspectives. I wanted a program that didn’t just teach business concepts, but also challenged me to think critically, communicate effectively, and lead confidently.

Beyond academics, what truly set Ivey apart was its strong sense of community. The program not only helped me grow professionally, but also introduced me to an incredible network of peers who have become lifelong friends. These relationships, built on shared experiences and mutual support, are among the most rewarding aspects of my Ivey journey. Looking back, Ivey was the perfect fit – it prepared me to advance my career while giving me a community I can always rely on.

What personal or professional accomplishment are you most proud of?

One of the accomplishments I’m most proud of is my journey in building a successful real estate business while balancing the demands of family life. Transitioning from a corporate career to running my own business was both a challenging and rewarding experience. It required me to wear many hats – marketer, negotiator, strategist – all while ensuring I provided exceptional service to my clients.

On a personal level, I’m especially proud of being able to create a meaningful impact in my community by helping families and individuals find homes where they can thrive. It’s deeply fulfilling to know that my work plays a role in shaping lives and creating lasting roots.

Balancing this professional journey with raising my two young children has been a testament to my resilience and determination, and I’m grateful for the support of my family and the lessons I’ve learned along the way.

What do you like to do when you’re not working?

When I’m not working, I love spending quality time with my family, especially exploring Toronto’s vibrant neighbourhoods and hidden gems. Travelling is another passion of mine – I enjoy discovering new cultures, architecture, and history, which often inspires my work in real estate.

I also cherish moments of personal growth and community building. Whether it’s planning community events for clients and friends or engaging with the Ivey alumni network, I find joy in creating meaningful connections.

When it’s time to unwind, you’ll likely find me reading, enjoying music that connects me to my cultural roots, playing badminton, or watching a great movie with my kids.

What is your favourite memory from your time at Ivey?

The China Study Trip – it was so much fun travelling and experiencing a different culture with Ivey friends. We had the opportunity to connect with each other outside of the classroom and experience so many firsts together. Did you know you can slide down the Great Wall of China?

What is the most important takeaway from your Ivey experience?

The most important takeaway from my Ivey experience is the power of networking and building meaningful relationships. Ivey taught me that success isn’t just about what you know – it’s also about who you surround yourself with. The program gave me access to a diverse and accomplished group of peers, mentors, and alumni, many of whom have become lifelong friends and trusted advisors.

Collaborating with such a dynamic network during and after the program has opened doors, provided invaluable insights, and reinforced the importance of supporting one another’s growth. This sense of community and connection is something I carry with me in both my personal and professional life. It’s a reminder that investing in relationships is as important as investing in skills.

Are you still connected to the School in any way?

Yes, I’m still very much connected to Ivey. I currently serve as the lead for the Women in Ivey Community on the Ivey Alumni Board, where I focus on fostering engagement and strengthening ties among women graduates. It’s been an incredibly rewarding experience to help create a supportive network for women in business, and I’m proud to contribute to the ongoing legacy of Ivey’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

In addition to my board role, I continue to stay in touch with fellow alumni, attending events and connecting with peers who are always eager to share knowledge and support one another. Ivey has played such an integral part in my journey, and I’m grateful to remain actively involved.
