Scholarship spotlight: Financial support boosts international student’s confidence

Jan 14, 2025

As a newcomer to Canada, HBA student Alice Huang had to adapt to a new country and culture as well as Ivey’s program, but receiving a scholarship gave her a sense of belonging that motivated her to succeed.

Huang, an HBA ’26 candidate, received the HBA ’74 Scholarship, a generous financial gift from the Class of HBA ’74, which is awarded to incoming Ivey HBA students based on academic achievement and demonstrated community leadership. Having arrived in Canada just three years ago, Huang said she initially found it challenging to be herself in the program, but the scholarship reinforced for her the importance of pursuing career and life paths that reflect her own unique interests.

“This scholarship means so much more than financial support. It makes me feel accepted and validated as an international student, showing that all my hard work is recognized and appreciated,” said Huang. “It reinforced my goal of pursuing a career in business where I can truly express myself and bring a unique perspective to the table.”

In the video above, Huang discusses how the scholarship has encouraged her to be open to new opportunities.
