Detroit water crisis

Ivey Assistant Professor Wren Montgomery’s award-winning research on the Detroit Water Crisis explored the impact of declining institutions on access to essential services for poor and marginalized communities, and how this can be addressed.

In new research, Montgomery is continuing this longitudinal study of the Detroit water context to examine the additional consequences of the COVID-19 Pandemic. As both crises reveal the intersecting and overlapping injustices of race and socioeconomic status, this in-depth study seeks to expose how vulnerable and marginalized communities were able to mobilize around the crisis and demand changes to their water system.

Montgomery’s research will likely have important implications and insights on market-based models for access and affordability to basic services, such as health, education, the food system, and eldercare (among others). The work is currently in the peer-review process.
