I am currently an HBA student, and I completed my first two years at Western University in Biology and Psychology. My background in the sciences instilled in me a passion for sustainability and environmental preservation, with an emphasis on the urgent need to safeguard our planet’s resources. Beyond the classroom, I enjoy spending time outdoors through activities like hiking and gardening, which consistently reinforces the importance of nurturing the environment in my mind.

What is your personal definition of sustainability?

My take on sustainability revolves around actions and practices that fulfill current needs while also supporting the environmental and ecological health of our planet. It involves using the planet and its resources in a way that maintains their availability and health for the long term, ensuring that individuals, communities, and economies can thrive now and, in the future, without depleting or damaging the natural work or the quality of life for future generations. To me, sustainability is not just about minimizing our environmental footprint; it is about creating systems and ways of living that are regenerative and prioritize long-term well-being over short-term gains.

What role do you see sustainability playing in your professional career?

Although my desired career path is uncertain, I am sure that sustainability will play a significant part in it. Embracing sustainability can offer many advantages, such as gaining a competitive edge, driving innovation, and nurturing forward-thinking leadership qualities.

As the value placed on sustainability continues to grow in the minds of consumers and investors alike; advocating for and implementing sustainable practices remains salient for business leaders. As a future leader, I have the opportunity to cultivate and build a strong, positive, and forward-thinking competitive advantage. I also plan to drive meaningful change within my organization and industry by incorporating sustainable practices and policies. This commitment not only aligns with a growing global movement towards environmental responsibility but also positions me to make a significant impact in any professional path I choose to follow.

Furthermore, sustainability challenges us to think creatively and develop innovative solutions that are both environmentally friendly and economically viable. This means integrating sustainable products, services, and operations, leading to new business models and opportunities. It is clear that sustainability will be a key driver of innovation across various industries.

What sustainability projects have you been engaged in?

Recently, I started a project to mitigate fast-fashion practices and promote sustainability in the retail and fashion sector. My initiative involved acquiring second-hand clothing from clients, upcycling and repurposing it, and then selling the newly revamped items. This venture addressed a gap in knowledge and accessibility concerning sustainable practices, offering consumers a straightforward way to engage in more sustainable practices. Given the significant environmental impact of the fashion industry, from contributing to climate change and filling landfills, this business offered a way to engage in a sustainable alternative within the industry.

On a personal level, I have taken up vegetarianism in an effort to engage in more sustainable practices. Learning about the meat industry’s detrimental effects on the environment motivated me to avoid supporting it; the meat-producing sector is one of the leading causes of environmental pollution and degradation by prioritizing rapid production and profit over ethical and environmentally focused considerations. Ultimately, by adopting a vegetarian lifestyle, I aim to reduce my environmental impact and promote a more sustainable way of living.

I hope to continue engaging with sustainability projects, both business and personal-related, with the goal of furthering sustainable practices and awareness in various sectors.
