Being born and raised in Vietnam, I grasped the significance of sustainability more intimately than anyone else. I remember going to sleep with the mask on and having to boil water before drinking, this was my norm. Studying in Canada made me realize how significantly life changed across the globe. Delving deeper into sustainability studies, I'm continually amazed by the innovative solutions that have catalyzed substantial changes in both business practices and environmental conservation here. I have dedicated myself to effect positive changes in the lives of people in Vietnam and around the globe.

What is your personal definition of sustainability?

To me, sustainability embodies a lifestyle or a practice that upholds present necessities without compromising future resources. Studying the triad of sustainability's core principles: people (social), planet (environment), and profit (economy), is fundamental to crafting truly transformative and sustainable solutions to effect meaningful, long-term changes.

What role do you see sustainability playing in your professional career?

Sustainability plays a central role in my professional career. Having worked on multiple consulting projects for social services organizations, I was able to gain hands-on experience on crafting and implementing sustainable solutions to business problems. I also realized my passion for helping businesses do well by doing good. Going into my internship in sustainability consulting this summer, I aim to actively contribute to the advancement of sustainable practices within organizations, guiding them towards more environmentally friendly, socially responsible, and economically viable operations. I see myself in a career of impact, assisting businesses to think sustainably and drive positive changes.

What sustainability projects have you been engaged in?

During my trip to Costa Rica to study sustainability organized by Western University, I explored sustainable business models and corporate practices focused on environmental preservation. Seeing how individuals, organizations, and government entities prioritized sustainability underscored the collective effort needed for a resilient future. Drawing lessons from their successes and challenges helped me understand the interconnectedness of environmental, social, and governance factors in shaping business strategies. Upon my return, I assumed the role of Project Lead at the Ivey Social Impact Club for the Western Community Food Drive. Leveraging the knowledge acquired, I spearheaded a team of consultants in devising a sustainable growth strategy and succession plan. This involved optimizing operations and fostering collaboration with various clubs and organizations, thereby enhancing the drive's impact and longevity.

Please list any sustainability-related interests you want to explore during the certificate.

I would like to explore ethical investing and sustainable finance. Coming out of my internship in sustainability consulting this summer, I will have acquired some knowledge about impact investing. I want to further solidify my knowledge and learn about this topic in more depth. Moreover, I’m interested in net zero economy and waste reduction, as it directly relates to multiple issues I care about, like food insecurity. This resource can equip me with tools to mitigate environmental degradation.
