Evolving Landscape of Sustainability Research in the Business and Management Literature: A Bibliometric Literature Review

Abstract

This paper explores how the business and management research has addressed ‘sustainability’ by conducting a bibliometric review to provide comprehensive view of the literature. This paper analysed 25,737 sustainability-related papers published in ABS ranked journals, following the DNICT procedures consisting of five steps: data construction, network construction, initial analysis, cluster analysis, and text analysis. Results have shown that the field of sustainability research has grown exponentially and has become increasingly diverse in different academic disciplines. The result has identified the influential authors and main journals, together with 23 research streams including Corporate Social Responsibility, Operations & supply chain, Tourism, Transition, Consumption, Economic, Project management, Entrepreneurship, Circular economy, Competitive advantage, Development, Transportation, Governance, Education, Human resource management, Information management, Microfinance, Fiscal policy, Smart city, System thinking, Scheduling, Lean Six Sigma, and Sport. At the same time, emerging research trends, gaps in the literature, and future research direction, are suggested.
