With only two days before departing to Mombasa the surreal feeling is now only starting to set in. Exhausted from training week, our minds are still racing on all the things we need to get done before we leave. The level of physical and mental preparation required for the course was beyond any of our initial expectations. At first, we felt overwhelmed, but quickly came to understand that this intensive training was necessary to extract the full value of this course. In our eyes, anyone could sign up for a traditional international or service learning trip, go abroad and build a school or teach English with minimal experience or relevant skills.
This course offered us the ability to teach the case study method we have been practicing for a full year and have mastered (or so we think), and have a significant impact at JKUAT. Knowing we have something valuable to offer is the fuel of our excitement as our departure date approaches. We look most forward to meeting the business students and sitting in on a typical class and witnessing how similar/different we really are.
We are a bit nervous because there are still a bunch of unknowns, but that’s the fun of it. The situation as it stands seems a little uncomfortable for most of us to be honest, but the feeling of discomfort is part of the whole learning process because, we believe, you are only truly learning when you are uncomfortable. We look forward to learning more about the locals and ourselves throughout our journey and to all the stories we will have to tell when we return. Mpaka baadaye! -Team Mombasa
