Over the months of July and August, Prof. Michael King, the Co-Director of Ivey’s Scotiabank Digital Banking Lab, has been collaborating with the University of Cambridge’s Centre for Alternative Finance on the Canadian portion of a global survey of alternative lending platforms.
This annual survey collects self-reported data from online crowdfunding and lending platforms. It is the benchmark for the fintech industry, providing the most comprehensive data on this activity. The Cambridge survey is the only academic effort to collect rigorous data from all regions of the world – the UK and Europe, Asia, North and South America, and the Caribbean.
In the news story posted on the NCFA website, Prof. King says “As we look ahead to the completion of the Federal Financal Sector Review early in 2019, this data will be vital for promoting open banking and other initiatives that support Canada’s fintech sector. When platforms opt out, they are effectively telling policymakers that alternative finance is not important and not worthy of the government’s attention or support.”
