After two years of virtual competition, Hack Western 9 excitedly welcomed hackers back to an in-person event. Hack Western is Western University's annual student-run hackathon, allowing students to innovate, build and create amazing technologies.
This year's competition ran from November 18-20, 2022. Hackers collaborated in teams of up to four to build web, mobile, and hardware projects, while participating in workshops, learning from mentors, and competing for prizes. In total the competition saw 330 in-person hackers submit a total of 72 projects.
100% of students surveyed in an anonymous survey distributed during the event indicated that they would be interested in participating in the next Hack Western. The survey also asked for feedback from the hackers - a few of the comments submitted included:
"[My favourite part of Hack Western was] meeting with other hackers and the awesome environment. The organizers did a great job in terms of creating a supportive environment and hyping people up."
"The community was so enthusiastic"
"I really enjoyed the atmosphere of everyone working on a project and being inspired by their ideas"
" Loved the experience of participating in workshops! I was able to learn new things and network which I was really about."
Eighteen prize categories were available, totaling $29,180 in prizes. Scotiabank is a Diamond-tier sponsor for this event.
Thank you to all the participating hackers for a great weekend of hacking! And congratulations to the entire Hack Western 9 organizing team on another successful Hack Western!
